The association Polish Women in Mathematics was founded in Rzeszów, on April 2, 2016, at the Founding Congress of PWM, which was attended by 25 people. The participants of the congress unanimously decided to create and register an association called the Polskie Towarzystwo Kobiet w Matematyce with the abbreviation PTKM and the English name Polish Women in Mathematics (PWM). PWM was formally registered on 5 July 2016 in the National Court Register under the number KRS: 0000626678. Since 2016 PWM has played a critical role in increasing the presence and visibility of women in the mathematical sciences.
